We’ve all had waves in our career. Some big ones. Some small ones. Some perfect ones. And some complete wipe outs!
As I look back over my 25 years in financial services, my years prior to that as an entrepreneur and even back to my bartending days in college, I think about which waves I wish I had ridden but didn’t, which ones I would ride all the way to the beach again, which ones I wish I had jumped off sooner and which ones I wish I had let pass me by.
I like this surfing vs career path analogy; the power of water, looking at the horizon, waves to catch, waves you get distracted by. Do I want to take that wave because its big and I want to look good? Or is it the right wave? What do the other surfers think?
In order to catch the right wave you have to feel empowered in your mind and your body. Be in concert and connected between your heart and your head. And you can’t do that when you are afraid, having anxiety or over thinking. Your thoughts and your feelings are not real. They are products of your belief systems that were created by events in your life.
When I left corporate America I was ready for a total shift. I was on dry land for so long – I needed to get out in the water. I went to surf camp and my entire thought process shifted. The Universe is playful like that. I committed to myself to take 90 days to just detox from 20 years on the road constantly and the death by meetings. Then I took stock; what did I love about my job and what did I hate about it? How could I do what I love and leave behind the stuff I didn’t enjoy?
For me the wrong waves were all the offers I got doing the same thing I was doing before. Big waves, power, limelight, looking good! But I let them pass and continued looking at the horizon, waiting for MY wave.
My passion is developing people. Helping them identify their Super Power and find their Authentic Voice. Showing them how to wait for the right wave for them even if the other surfers didn’t take it. And when they find it, take that wave with passion and joy!
When I saw my wave come in, I didn’t hesitate! Welcome to MelissaCox.net. Where the waves are abundant and I’ll teach you to surf.
